Lifelong health is very much dependent on digestive health. A properly functioning digestive system is not only essential for food nutrient absorption but also performs critical immune and detoxification functions in the body. Compromised digestive function can result in chronic energy deficiencies, compromised immunities and allergic reactions, weight gain, gastrointestinal discomfort, and affect the brain as well as mood and emotions.
Creating a good foundation for digestive health is ESSENTIAL for all aspects of your health and wellbeing, affecting body, mind, and emotions!
Let’s take a look at four essential components:
- Soothing digestive discomfort (because we just simply want to feel better)
- Supporting nutrient absorption
- Supporting a healthy microbiome
- Reducing stress & increasing stress management capacity
Soothing Digestive Discomfort
For occasional discomforts, essential oils can be wonderful natural tools to soothe the digestive system.
The following are some of the best essential oils for supporting digestion and overall digestive health:
Peppermint Essential Oil
Ginger Essential Oil
Fennel Essential Oil
Coriander Essential Oil
Caraway Essential Oil
Cardamom Essential Oil
Anise Essential Oil
Marjoram Essential Oil
Black Pepper Essential Oil
Lemon Essential Oil
Cinnamon Essential Oil
IMPORTANT: only use essential oils internally that are labeled as a dietary supplement and safe for internal use.
One of my favorite blends to support the digestive system is a blend called Digestzen which contains Peppermint, Ginger, Fennel, Coriander, Caraway, Cardamom and Anise. This blend has been most beneficial to my personal digestive health and many of my customers. Digestzen can be taken internally (1 drop in 4 oz. of water or tea) up to 3x daily. It is also very balancing to the digestive system when applied topically to the abdomen. Put a few drops of fractionated coconut oil into your palm, add 1-2 drops of Digestzen, then massage belly in a clockwise motion (also add a dab of the blend right into the belly button) 3-4 times a day as needed or use the Digestzen roll-on. Digestzen is also available in form of softgels should you not like the taste of the essential oil in water or tea.

Supporting Digestion & Nutrient Absorption
What are digestive enzymes?
The purpose of digestive enzymes is to break down large molecules of food into smaller, more easily absorbed nutrients that the body can use for energy, growth, and repair. There are several types of digestive enzymes, each of which is designed to break down a specific type of nutrient. For example, amylase breaks down carbohydrates, lipase breaks down fats, and protease breaks down proteins. These enzymes work together to break down food into its component parts, which can then be absorbed by the body and used as fuel or building blocks. Supplementing with a good digestive enzyme complex supports the absorption of nutrients.
Benefits of supplementing with a digestive enzyme complex
DigestZen TerraZyme® Digestive Enzyme Complex is a proprietary blend of active whole-food enzymes and supporting cofactors that are often deficient in cooked, processed, and preservative-laden foods. The powerful combination of digestive enzymes found in DigestZen TerraZyme supports the body’s constant production of enzymes critical for healthy biochemical functions, including healthy digestion of food nutrients and cellular metabolism of nutrients to energy.* DigestZen TerraZyme includes a variety of whole-food enzymes that help with the digestion of proteins, fats, complex carbohydrates, sugars, and fiber.

Supporting a Healthy Microbiome
The purpose of probiotics is to help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut, which is important for overall health. The gut is home to trillions of bacteria, both good and bad, which play a vital role in many bodily functions, including digestion, immune function, and mental health.
Probiotics help by introducing beneficial bacteria into the gut, which can help to crowd out harmful bacteria and restore balance. They can also produce substances that inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and strengthen the lining of the gut, which can help to prevent inflammation and other health problems.
Even better than using just a probiotic is using a pre-, pro-, and post-biotic to support a healthy microbiome such as PB Restore ProBiome.
Your microbiome functions like an invisible organ. It’s a vast and diverse ecosystem of microbes that are essential to wellness. Key to microbiome function is proper microbial diversity and balance, with a high ratio of good bacteria to bad. The body’s natural aging process can disrupt your microbiome, along with an unbalanced diet, lack of exercise, poor sleep schedule, and stressful lifestyle. Using supplementation can help restore microbiome health.
doTERRA PB Restore ProBiome Complex is a unique formulation of 30 pre-, pro-, and postbiotics and bacteriophages that help restore microbial diversity and balance for optimal microbiome health and overall wellness.* The 18 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) of probiotics, or good bacteria, consist of 24 active cultures—an unparalleled variety of carefully selected strains from 22 different species—for exceptional microbial diversity.* The prebiotic fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and bacteriophages help achieve and maintain microbial balance by encouraging the growth of good bacteria and selectively attacking the bad.* The postbiotic—made up of bioactive compounds produced from healthy bacteria—provides additional health benefits.*
The doTERRA PB Restore dual-chamber, time-released delivery system supports the body throughout the day.* It aids digestive comfort, micronutrient synthesis, gut barrier integrity, and healthy metabolism.* Metabolites produced by the bacterial strains in doTERRA PB Restore have been shown to support skin health, the respiratory and immune systems, and a healthy inflammatory response.* Early research on certain ingredients—including L. Rhamnosus CRL 1505, the postbiotic in doTERRA PB Restore—indicates they may also help with brain, cardiovascular, urological, and metabolite function, as well as a healthy DNA response to oxidative stress.* Order PB Restore ProBiome here.
Releasing Stress & Increasing Stress Management Capacity
Stress can have a significant impact on the digestive system, as it can disrupt the normal functioning of the digestive tract and exacerbate certain digestive disorders. When the body experiences stress, it triggers the release of various hormones and chemicals, such as cortisol and adrenaline, which can affect the digestive process in several ways:
- Reduced blood flow to the digestive system: When the body is stressed, blood flow is redirected away from the digestive system to the muscles, heart, and lungs. This can lead to reduced digestive function and slower digestion.
- Increased stomach acid production: Stress can stimulate the production of stomach acid, which can lead to heartburn, acid reflux, and ulcers.
- Alterations in gut motility: Stress can affect the movement of food through the digestive tract, causing constipation, diarrhea, or bloating.
- Increased inflammation: Chronic stress can lead to increased inflammation in the digestive tract, which can exacerbate conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and ulcers.
- Changes in gut microbiome: Stress can alter the balance of bacteria in the gut, which can affect digestion and immunity.
These effects of stress on the digestive system can lead to a variety of digestive symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. Managing stress through relaxation techniques, exercise, and therapy can be helpful in reducing the impact of stress on the digestive system.
