7 Hours of Sleep or Less?
Here is what you need to know.
Quite a few of my clients expressed that they are getting less than 7 hours of sleep per night, not being aware of the significant implications this has for both the brain and overall well-being.
Sleep is not just a period of rest, it’s a vital time when your brain and body go through crucial processes to maintain your cognitive and emotional health as well as physical wellbeing. When you consistently don’t get enough sleep, you may notice that you are struggling with cognitive tasks, difficulty concentrating, and memory problems (learn more about how sleep affects the brain, memory and emotions). It can be emotionally taxing too, leaving you more irritable, emotionally sensitive, and easily stressed. These consequences can spill over into your daily life, affecting not only how productive you feel but affecting relationships, decision-making, learning new things or being creative.
The physical toll on your health is also significant, as chronic sleep deprivation is associated with increased risks of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular problems. This, in turn, can indirectly affect your brain’s function. Your immune system becomes compromised, making you more vulnerable to illnesses. Plus, the increased stress hormones resulting from sleep deprivation can further impact your brain and overall health. Getting consistently less than 7 hours of quality sleep per night can affect mood regulation, potentially leading to mood disorders and it may increase your risk of developing age-related memory disorders by 70%.
It’s important to be fully aware of the consequences of inadequate sleep, not just in terms of the number hours but also the QUALITY OF SLEEP. Priority your sleep, improve your sleep habits, incorporate soothing essential oils for sleep, and even take a look at how different foods may affect your sleep. If needed, seek professional guidance to ensure that you get the rest your body and mind need to thrive and be at their best.
Please take care of yourself by prioritizing your sleep for a healthier and happier you.
