Essential Oils for Study or Mentally Demanding Work MyOilGuide.com Blog PostEssential oils can support our concentration and focus and support retaining learned knowledge by stimulating certain brain functions while creating a calming yet alert environment.  They are also wonderful motivators and can help us stay motivated during times of study, adjusting to a new job or while handling a mentally challenging workload.

Find out which essential oils I use most frequently, how they work, and the most effective ways to use them:

How do essential oils support focus and concentration?

  1. Stimulating the Brain

Certain essential oils contain compounds that may help enhance cognitive function, support memory retention/recall, and increase alertness. For example, peppermint oil contains menthol, which has been shown to increase alertness and improve memory performance and Vetiver may help us to better stay on a task and focus and reduce thoughts jumping from one thing to another.

  1. Reducing Stress and Feelings of Anxiousness

Essential oils like lavender, roman chamomile, and juniper berry have calming properties that can reduce feeling of stress, anxiousness or worry, which often interfere with our ability to concentrate and focus. Also, citrus oils have the inherent ability to help us lower stress levels, creating an environment that allows us to pay full attention to the tasks at hand.

  1. Balancing Mood

Essential oils such as rosemary, lemon, wild orange, and Frankincense can uplift our moods and reduce feelings of fatigue, making it easier for us to concentrate on tasks. Plus, when we are in a better mood and in a more positive mindset, things just seem to start flowing and become easier to manage.

  1. Motivation

The combination of citrus and mints such as wild orange and peppermint can be very motivating and also help us stay motivated and more alert for extended periods of time.

Most Effective Ways to Use Essential Oils to Support Focus and Concentration

  1. Diffusion:
    • Use an essential oil diffuser to disperse the essential oils into the air. Diffusing allows us to continuously inhale the essential oils and benefit from their beautiful properties.
    • Diffuse essential oils like peppermint, rosemary, basil and lemon in your study or workspace to create an alert and focused environment.
    • Diffuse wild orange and peppermint in the bathroom in the morning while getting ready to get motivated, feel alert and ready for the day ahead. Consider getting a car diffuser and diffuse wild orange and peppermint on your way to work, school or college.
    • Add a total of 4-6 drops to a room diffuser (mix and match essential oils to meet your needs) and add 1-2 drops to a car diffuser.
    • Diffuse calming essential oils at night to support restful sleep. Add 4 drops of Lavender and 2 drops of Vetiver to improve quality and quantity of your sleep.
  2. Topical Application:
    • Dilute a few drops of essential oil with a carrier oil (such as fractionated coconut oil) and apply to pulse points on the inside of your wrists (rub wrists together), apply to temples, the back of the neck (onto cervical spine), and/or over your heart area.
    • Topical application allows the essential oils to be absorbed through the skin and provide sustained benefits.
    • Mix and match essential oils from the suggestions above to best suit your personal needs. Reapply every 4-6 hours.
    • Add 2 drops of Lavender to a small amount of fractionated coconut oil in your palm, rub hands together, and apply to your traps and sides of your neck. This is where we often carry stress and tension. Try this before study/work to release tension and feel more relaxed and before bedtime!
  3. Inhalation:
    • Place a few drops of essential oil on a cotton ball or tissue and inhale for a few minutes.
    • Add a few drops to the inside of your palms, rub hands together, cup 6” from face (do not touch eyes), close your eyes and inhale for 2 minutes. Chose calming essential oils when feeling stressed, anxious or worried and chose essential oils that help you feel more alert for a great pick-me-up when feeling fatigued.
  4. Aromatherapy Jewelry:
    • Use aromatherapy necklaces or bracelets designed to hold a few drops of essential oil. This provides a continuous release of the essential oil’s scent throughout the day. Great way to benefit from essential oils while at school, college, work or studying.
  1. Aromatherapy Inhalers
    • Inhalers are wonderful tools when you work or study in a scent free environment. Use the inhaler to benefit aromatically from the essential oils without affecting anybody around you. They are small and easy to keep in your pocket or purse so you can use them throughout the day. Click here to learn how to make your inhaler. They are so inexpensive to make and will last for many months!
  1. Room Sprays:
    • Create a room spray by mixing a few drops of essential oil with distilled water in a spray bottle (you may want to add a couple of drops vitamin E oil, so the essential oils will better combine with the water). Spritz in your room to refreshen the air and enhance focus.
  2. Baths:
    • Adding a few drops of selected essential oils to sea salts for a warm bath can be a great way to benefit from inhalation and topical absorption at the same time, while promoting relaxation and mental clarity.

Using one or a combination of these suggestions, essential oils can become a natural and effective way for us to enhance focus and concentration, so we can feel more productive, creative, and pave the way to greater success.
